OCTOBER #MAMACRUSH: DOMINIQUE
October, 2 2018
It is a special feeling when a dear friend is also your #EntrepreneurMamaCrush. I met Dominique de Bourgknecht over a decade ago - a friendship that started when we both had corporate careers. Then came children, our own businesses, and more good times spent together than I can count. I don’t exaggerate when I say, Dominique is a woman who can move mountains if she puts her mind to it. And she does it with such elegant ease. That’s what she did with her brilliant idea of creating a baby deedee sleep nest. What is a sleep nest, you ask? Good question and one Dominique has been answering for 10 years since first launching her brand. A sleep nest is a kind of baby sleeping bag for babies who don’t like blankets or swaddles but still deserve a good night snooze. Thanks to her, now hundreds of thousands of babies and toddlers, including my kids when they were that age, enjoy cozy naps and uninterrupted nights. Needless to say, Dominique has been a huge asset to me on my own business journey and I am thrilled to bring you her story this month.
Tell us a little bit about your background and what has inspired the idea for baby deedee?
I was working in Finance when I had my son Adrian, aka “deedee”. He was not a good sleeper and his room was the draftiest and coldest of the house. I set out to design a warm, cozy breathable baby sleep bag and called it the sleep nest. My son, the real baby deedee just turned ten years old!
Where do you draw your inspiration today?
It can really come from anywhere, fabrics I come across and even in one case we sampled colors from one of my son’s drawings. I had to send the actual drawing to the factory so they could copy the color he came up with!
What is your new mom’s ‘must have’ list?
I tried to keep it simple: no nursing pillows, I bathed my babies in the sink, I used a towel on the bed as a changing pad.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
Although the baby stage felt to me like I was suspended in time, I am really enjoying being a mom of a 10, 8 and 4 year old right now. They are more independent and have so many interests they keep me on google for answers.
How has motherhood changed you?
Yes definitely. It took me a while to make that transition from working woman to mother - but motherhood changes everything. I am better at prioritizing, hopefully more kind and patient. My kids needs are constantly changing, so I feel like I have to adapt at each stage.
What does your perfect day look like?
Perfect day? I thought being a mother was realizing there is no perfect day and still being happy!
We always look for ways to help moms on their breastfeeding journey, and not just with clothes. What’s the best advice you received that you can share with new moms?
Not to put too much pressure on yourself. I mixed formula and breastfeeding with one of my kids, exclusively breastfed another and bottle fed the third and it’s all fine in my opinion.
What does fashion mean to you?
A day off:)
What is your favorite piece from our FW18 Collection?
Rosie Nursing Top in Pearl.
Thanks, Dominique, you inspire us, always.
